~ KINGSTON, R.I. - 03/07/2007 - Hunger Free South Kingstown campaign hosted community conversation. Creating a Hunger-Free South Kingstown was the topic of a community conversation at the Peace Dale Congregational Church, Peace Dale. The goal is to create an environment where everyone in South Kingstown has enough food to eat year-round.
The evening was sponsored by the Feinstein Center for a Hunger-Free America at the University of Rhode Island, in partnership with the Jonnycake Center in Peace Dale. Invitations to the "conversation" were mailed to elected officials, schools, organizations, churches, and agencies and the organizers hope that those receiving the invitations will spread the word. Anyone interested in knowing more about hunger and/or willing to help to end was encouraged to attend.
Gorman noted community-based efforts are part of a nationwide approach to respond to hunger. "Hunger often seems to be overwhelming and, therefore, insurmountable. More than 38 million people in America are considered to be food insecure. If we start with one community at a time, it's possible to get a handle on hunger and, as a community, help the people who need it the most."
The organizers noted that they hope to hold a similar event in Narragansett, and that they will provide encouragement and support to other community leaders who would like to begin an initiative for their city or town. ~ KINGSTON, RI - 10/03/07 - FIGHTING HUNGER HELPS THE ECONOMY AND IS A PRO-BUSINESS ACTIVITY
A key message of the Third Annual Statewide Business to Business Expo, sponsored by the South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, October 3rd from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the URI Ryan Center in Kingston, is that fighting hunger helps the economy and is a pro-business activity.
Robert Weygand, Vice President for Administration at URI and Paula Spirito, Vice President at The Washington Trust Company Narragansett branch, serve as Co-Chairs of the 2007 Business to Business Expo and are pleased to announce this will be a 'Hunger Free' community event, coordinated with the Hunger Task Force, a joint venture between the Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America at the University of Rhode Island and the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale. "There are so many ways in which hunger affects our economy and the health of local business," explained Weygand. "We are just beginning to explore the variety of ways the business community can support our community-wide 'Hungry Free' event to the benefit of all."
"We want to create a new tradeshow experience, with some non-traditional features at this year's Expo, so we're asking attendees to bring non-perishable food items for collection at the entrance to the Ryan Center as they come into the Expo event," explained Spirito. "The Hunger Task Force will then distribute all the donations to the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale for their food bank and distribution to other local service agencies.
"We are thrilled to include support for this effort to educate the business community about the economic impact of hunger at the Expo," explained Darlene Evans, President and CEO of the South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce. "A 'Hunger Free' agenda does help the economy and spurs local small business.
We have learned, for instance, that for every federal tax dollar spent locally on the Food Stamp Program, an additional 84 cents is generated in our local economy and boosts our local retail & service businesses. We hope the food collected at the Expo will be distributed to people who currently are facing a food crisis. Working with the Hunger Task Force on this has provided us with a win-win opportunity!"
The Hunger Task Force, with representatives of URI's Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America and the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale, had an informational table at the Business Expo.

~ SOUTH KINGSTON, RI - 06/09/2011 - 5th annual Hunger Awareness Day concert, community event and food drive featuring free food, music and a very special, history making event - World's Biggest "Human Pizza" Record Set in Rhode Island!
The public was invited to be part of history and help create the world's first, and therefore the world's biggest, Human Pizza! One hundred sixteen people showed up wearing "pizza colors" of red (for sauce), white (for cheese) and brown (for crust) and were arranged for an aerial photo documenting the World's Biggest Human Pizza. The event took place at the 5th annual Hunger Awareness Day on June 9th at 6:00 PM pm at Marina Park in South Kingstown, RI.
Hunger Awareness Day is coordinated by the Hunger Task Force, a joint initiative of the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale and the URI Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America.
Over a dozen local pizzerias and ice cream stores provided free pizza and ice cream and live music, provided by members of the ‘1 of 52’ Hunger Network (a national grassroots organization) entertained the crowd. Local companies Buckley Heating & Cooling and Sign Guild also donated pizza color T-shirts for the crowd.
A food drive kicked off the week preceding the event with a collection by businesses along Main Street in Wakefield organized by the Wakefield Downtown Merchants Association. In addition, event attendees were asked to bring non-perishable food items. Over 225 pounds of food plus monetary donations were collected for the Jonnycake Center's food pantry.
The aerial photo of the Human Pizza was taken by Don Bousquet and Son Aerial Photography. Don Bousquet has been capturing Rhode Island foibles in his now famous cartoons in books, magazines and newspapers for decades. Now, he and his son Nate are capturing "bird's eye views" of Southern New England for individuals, businesses and events with a fleet of radio-controlled aircraft of their own design.
Organizer Steve Maciel said this about the event: "We're building the World's Biggest Human Pizza a slice at a time with a series of events. As we gain momentum, we'll ultimately build an entire pizza. Rhode Island has a long heritage with pizza. Grilled pizza was first introduced here and Travel & Leisure magazine recently honored Providence as having the third best Pizza in all of America. And now, the state will forever be known as the home of the World's Biggest Human Pizza! We're also building the connection between using local ingredients and pizza toppings and tying it all in with the local food movement, improving our local economy and the goal of creating hunger free communities. Now that we've set this record, we issue a challenge to other organizations to beat it. We can be contacted through the website www.1of52.net for details."
