The 1 of 52 Artist Hunger Network
The 1 of 52 Artsist Hunger Network Newsletter
Electronic Version
Volume 2 August 1997
Stephen M. Maciel, Editor
Hi and welcome to our second newsletter.
We've had some exciting developments lately:
Did you all see the great article Andy Smith did on us in the Providence
Journal? (June 26, 1997, Lifebeat, Pop Music) Very complimentary. A real
'coming out' for the program in the Providence Metro area.
We've greatly expanded the scope of how to participate in the 1 of 52 AHN.
What we've realized is that it's not all just aobut money. Of course, funding
these programs is important. What I've learned, though, is that you can
throw money at a problem forever and not solve it. It's more about how people
act...and think...and influence others. I know that when we are fully up
and running with 52 local and national artists in each state...we are going
to inspire a groundswell of participation from the public. They will all
want to get in on what their pop heroes are doing.
So...if you haven't turned your artist friends on to this concept yet...
now is the time. Print out the Information Form and pass it along.
We've added some new members!

Service Way Above and Beyond The Call of Duty!
Now of course, I want you all to know that I greatly appreciate
each and every action you take to help us reach our goal of helping to end
hunger in America. I do want to take the time to give special recognition
to some of our fellow 1 of 52 participants who have gone way beyond the
call of duty.
TED DONOVAN
Ted is single-handedly responsible for my reinstituting the 1 of 52 AHN
after I let the original program dissipate a while back. There had come
a point in my life where I just couldn't follow up on each donor's yearly
participation. Ted took it upon himself to keep sending an annual donation.
When I learned of this, I decided that the concept can work with some tweaking
and to kick it off all over again. Now I ask for that annual involvement
right up front to make sure we only attract those who are in this for the
long haul. Thanks, Ted!
BLACKFOOT YANKEE
This band has not only been one of our longest and most ardent supporters
through donations and food drives at their shows, they have now generously
agreed to donate a song from their debut CD to be the theme song for the
program. The song is "The Time is Now" from their outstanding
accomplishment, "Standing On Sacred Sound." The cut features a
chorus of children singing and is really striking!
GLASS ATTIC
This band showed their commitment to the program by donating from two shows
during their first 1 of 52 week. These young guys are very enthusiastic
about their participation and are already planning next year's week!
CHUCK SMITH
Chuck has been working the cause of hunger long before I came along. He
graciously agreed to dedicate this year's "Week for Food" which
he organized with the town of North Kingstown as his part in our program.
This is a week-long program of events and hunger awareness to benefit the
North Kingstown Food Pantry.
CYNTHIA FIELD
Cindy, a member of The Sea Breezes clarinet/saxophone duo, slaved over our
Web site to get us up and running this summer.
I RELEASE THEE
This band organized a five act show at the Bitter End in New York with one-third
of the door charge going to Second Harvest and a food drive for a local
food pantry.
ALAN SHAWN FEINSTEIN
As if you don't know already, Alan Shawn Feinstein is a major player in
the hunger field, not only in Rhode Island and America, but throughout the
world. He participates in our program as an author and speaker. We are helping
him make RI the 1st hunger free state.
If your name does not appear in this issue of our newsletter,
it doesn't mean that I admire you any less. I'm not the 1 of 52 AHN. Each
of you is. You're All Heroes in My Book! Literally. Watch for the debut
of my self-published book "Workin' The Circuit: A Basic Guide to Gigging
Gigging." I feature the 1 of 52 AHN in the final chapter of the book.
