Welcome to our 19th "1 of 52" Hunger Network Newsletter.

Due to our government's obvious asleep-at-the-wheel economic policies, and its lack of prioritization for basic human needs, we know our grassroots movement is more relevant than ever. "The Time is Now" to continue our growth and spread our basic message that change is not going to come from somewhere else - it starts with us. By taking action in the only place where hunger can come to end: the community, we will effect change from the roots up, while influencing decisions from the top down.

Please find below a list of upcoming "1 of 52" Hunger Network events. You'll note that most of them are grouped around our base in Southern New England, where they are most likely to happen. We would love to see more nation-wide "1 of 52" events listed. We know that many of you take your actions anonymously without much fanfare though, please consider allowing us to post them to help inspire even more actions?

4th Annual SK Chamber of Commerce Business Expo Hosts Hunger Task Force for 2nd Year

SOUTH KINGSTON RI - 10/01/08 - A key emphasis of the 4th Annual Statewide Business to Business Expo, sponsored by the South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce at the University of Rhode Island's Ryan Center in Kingston, is that fighting hunger is critical to the economic well-being of our communities.

The Expo will be a Hunger-Free Community Event in cooperation with the Hunger Task Force, which is jointly coordinated by the URI Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America and the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale.

The South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce is challenging exhibitors and attendees to bring donations of non-perishable food items for collection at the entrance to the Ryan Center as they come to the Expo event. The Hunger Task Force will deliver the donations to the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale's emergency food pantry. The End Hunger Foundation / 1 of 52 Hunger Network serves on the Hunger Task Force committee. Visit www.skchamber.com for more information.

"1 of 52" Hunger Network Event with Glenn Dewell and Friends

"1 of 52" Hunger Network member Glenn Dewell will host a musical event at Java Madness,134 Salt Pond Road, Wakefield, RI, (401) 788-0088, on Saturday, October 4 from 11 am to 3 pm. Nonperishable food that is collected will be donated to the Hugh B. Bain Middle School Student Council. Any cash or checks collected that day will be donated to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

"This is going to be a difficult winter for many people" said Dewell. "The impact of the spike in heating oil prices has yet to be fully felt. Families will be forced to choose between being hungry or cold. Some may be both. It is important that everyone recognizes the severity of the situation and take action now to mitigate its effects."

Dewell will be inviting friends to sit in for the event, contributing music individually or as a group. A bluegrass jam session is scheduled for 1 pm.
